Earlier this month, BIN's Esther Dillard hosted the ninth annual Elmcor Fundraising Gala. The Queens, New York, non-profit has been around since 1965 and has helped thousands with food insecurity, recovery programs, housing, and youth education.

During the event, director Saeeda Dunston told the packed crowd that they are the area's only Black-owned, Black-led community program, which gets its strength from many partners who support an anti-racist and social justice initiative. Elmcor honored six amazing community members and organizations, including two young change-makers who live the values of Elmcor, recognizing their achievements and commitment to helping Black and Brown people thrive in Queens. Elmcor additionally celebrated Assembly member Jeffrion Aubry and wished him well as he retires after a transformative career as a lawmaker and advocate for Corona, Lefrak, and East Elmhurst.

This year, the non-profit raised around $8,000 in the room that evening. The full campaign event raised around $200,000. Next year’s gala, to be held on April 25th, 2025, will celebrate Elmcor's 60th anniversary.
